We chatted with Fermoie to find out a little more about their inspiration and top tips for decorating

Tell us a bit about Fermoie?

Fermoie is a British Company, designing and printing furnishing fabrics in Wiltshire.  The company was founded in 2012 by Martin Ephson and Tom Helme, previously the owners of Farrow & Ball and who bring to Fermoie a wealth of knowledge of design, colour, texture and printed textiles.  All of Fermoie’s fabrics are not only designed in our own Studio, but also printed in our our own factory, printing traditionally to create a subtle impression but with the depth of a woven fabric.  We are hugely proud not only of the product that we make, but of the service that we offer, printing to order with a lead time of just 5 days from order to dispatch.  Our studio has also created a range of accessories – lampshades and cushions using our fabrics, and these are all made by hand in England.

What is the inspiration behind your designs and colours?

That wealth of knowledge of early printed and woven textiles in our studio certainly inspires, but we are also driven by a determination to be original, in our hand drawn artwork, in our colours and in our print techniques.  Most exciting in our factory is the work that the studio and production do together to develop these techniques, giving the beautiful texture that is unique to Fermoie.

Where are your fabrics made?

Where possible we source all of our raw materials in the UK.  Our cottons, and soon to launch union cloths are woven in Yorkshire, with our Linen coming from Belgium as they are able to offer simply the best product to us.  All of our pigments are made here in the UK also, and of course the printing is done by us, here in Wiltshire.

What is your most popular colour palette?

That is a tough one – it does vary throughout the year and with the seasons, even by country as we sell all over the world.  Blues would come out top overall with Neutrals not far behind, but the joy of our range of colour and pattern is that they all sit so comfortably together that accessorising with contrasting colour works just brilliantly.

Do you have any tips for couples decorating their first home?

We present the range not by pattern, but by colour – on our website, in our showroom and in our Studio. We find this is the best way to see the range as a whole, and to see how  colours sit together.  Decide on the main colour that will be the ‘headline’ of a room – be that the curtains, or larger piece of furniture, and the other colours will be simpler to chose.  Lampshades and cushions can really transform a room too, just these simple additions can make it feel that there has been a whole makeover.
